Sustainable Saltaire
The context:
• The Stern Report
• The government’s aim of increasing the contribution of
renewables to the energy supply
• Rocketing energy bills for houses and businesses
• Dependence on unstable parts of the world for energy
supply
• A community of ageing buildings in a conservation area of
historical importance
The aims:
• To reduce Saltaire’s energy consumption and hence its
“carbon footprint”
• To investigate means of achieving conservation of energy
• To explore possibilities of generating “clean” energy
locally
• To work towards an “eco-friendly” community within an
existing set of buildings
• To produce ideas and results which benefit all people
within and around the World Heritage Site
The people:
• Saltaire residents, businesses and organisations (NOT
exclusively in World Heritage boundaries)
• Under the umbrella of Saltaire Village Society
The resources:
• Lots of south-facing roofs
• A flowing river
• Wind and rain
• The creative talents of those living and working in
Saltaire
• ………….(watch this space)
The current focus for 2007-8
• An energy survey of selected houses
• Investigation of the possibility of a Home Zone
• Publicity for a potential hydro-power project at the New
Mill
• Getting the best information and spreading the word
